Hi! I'm Hunter, and I'm a full stack engineer with a backend lean. I'm experienced in automating analysis, employing theory to derive optimizations, and building the connective tissue that holds applications together. Most of all, I enjoy learning the best practices that underly principled, effective software.
Currently, I'm interning at the Data Institute for Societal Challenges, where I process big data to support the USAF's 448th. Our team is small, so I've borne many mantles: I've automated data pipelines; integrated LLM embeddings into NLP tasks; optimized text processing with multithreaded SIMD; and built interactive visualizations that enable users to self-serve analytics.
Before DISC, I made software to serve first responders, cancer researchers, and local educators. For me, that's the most rewarding work: making software that empowers people. If that sounds like your project, then we're a good match!
I also speak working Japanese, play electric guitar, and just started studying Spanish. I know the alt-code for the em dash by rote, and my favorite drink is the caffé mocha—I moonlight as a barista, which I'm told suits my personality.

Near-Space Traffic Visualizer
Led service management for an ATC tool that uses cheaper hardware, increasing safety at small airfields that can't afford the million-dollar SOTA. Designed reslient microservice architecture with k3d and best-practice patterns to reduce coupling and complexity.
Speakapp - Discord VC Text-to-Speech
Deployed a persistent text-to-speech Discord bot, enabling users without mics to speak up. Iterated on user feedback to refine usability and scope.
Data Synthesis for Equitable Alzheimer's Classification
Identified, researched, and addressed ethical concerns about classifier underperformance on minority groups using GAN-enabled data synthesis.
Winner, CANSec 2024
Placed 1st of 29 teams in a cybersecurity capture-the-flag. Strategized with teammates to divide and conquer problems while knowing when to move on or ask for help. Won an iPad for my mom which was pretty neat!!
